BVLD Community Action Plan for Clean Air

Ministry of Environment and the BVLD Airshed Management Society (2003-2006)

Footprint is the facilitator for the implementation phase of this 5 year airshed management plan. This Plan targets seven major emissions sources including beehive burners, resource management debris burning, agriculature/land development/saw sawmill burning, stack emissions, road dust, space heating, and backyard burning. Energy Centre of the North

Community Futures Development Corporation of Nadina

Our role in this project is to consult with the communities of the Bulkley Valley to define a vision and conduct a needs assessment for an alternative energy demonstration and training  centre. A business plan assessing the feasibility of this concept was also prepared. Visit the Energy Centre webpage for more information.

Skeena-BVLD Wood Stove Exchange Campaign

BC Lung Association and Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection

There are approximately 3,700 uncertified wood stoves operating in the Skeena Region. This campaign seeks to replace old technology stoves with cleaner burning, efficient space heating applicances as well as educate wood stove operators on techniques for reducing fuel requirements and emissions. This project ran from August 15 to September 15, 2004. While education programs are on-going, the next exchange program with economic incentives is scheduled for March 2007. Visit the website.

Organics Recovery Study

Regional Districts of Kootenay Boundary and Central Kootenay, Celgar Pulp Company, and Federation of Canadian Muncipalities.

We are currently partnered with Western Bioresources Consulting Ltd in Castlegar to conduct a feasibility study for recovering 100% of organics from the waste stream for both Kootenay Boundary and Central Kootenay Regional Districts. On February 23 and 24, the Boards of the Regional Districts of Central Kootenay and Kootenay Boundary received the final report of the Organics Recovery Study and passed motions to further pursue organics recovery.  A joint committee comprised of four Directors from each Regional District and staff will meet over the next year to work out the details of establishing an in-vessel plus aerated static pile composting facility to serve the Nelson-Castlegar-Trail corridor.  The report is available by contacting the Regional Districts. Regional Waste Handling to Support a Zero Waste Goal

The scope of this 2002 study included determining the total cost of the existing system, examining alternative methods of of delivering the same service, outlining long term costs and economic development opportunities associated with landfilling versus resource recovery, and recommending optimum service parameters for a waste handling system to support the RDKB’s Zero Waste goal.  A copy of the final report for this project is available for Download (Acrobat PDF Format, 509kb)

Zero Waste North: making the links between tax shifting, climate change and zero waste

In 2002, Footprint partnered with the Town of Smithers to develop a Triple Bottom Line audit and business plan template for local businesses as well as examine how taxes, fees, and charges can be used to promote choices that support community sustainability. Copies of documents and reports are available by contacting our office.

Visit the Zero Waste North website to access a variety of on-line zero waste resources to support a network of communities from Prince George to Haida Gwaii.  This website has recently been streamlined to focus on local information and resources for Bulkley Valley residents. It includes publications and great links for zero waste campaigns, composting, recycling, green shopping tips. Due to current funding and project priorities, Footprint is actively seeking new partners to further develop this website.
